SUMMARY:Wyetta to play for Monday Night Restore - Sept 16\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Ragas with Wyetta Bontempo\nOn Sarode\nMonday September 16\, 2024 6:30 PM – Dusk\n (Bend\, Oregon\, USA)\n\nHost Cameron Larson writes \n“Well now\, gather ‘round\, friends\, ‘cause this Monday\, September 16th\, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM\, we’re settin’ out on a soulful journey for our Monday Restore. We’re blessed to have the one and only Wyetta Bontempo joinin’ us—one of just a handful of folks who can speak the sacred language of the sarode. That’s a sound so rare\, it’s like hearin’ the wind whisper ancient truths. \nWyetta’ll share her story and the wisdom of her craft\, and then we’ll all get comfortable as she lets the music flow\, speakin’ to the spirit in a way words never could. After we’ve soaked in the beauty of her song\, we’ll turn to the stars for a silent disco\, vibin’ with the full set of Rufus during Sol’s epic performance at Burning Man\, right from the Mayan Warrior art car. \nAnd when our souls are filled\, you can warm your body in the sauna\, take a cleansing dip in the cold plunge\, or let the cedar hot tub wrap you up like a gentle embrace. Spaces are limited\, and it’s just $15 to join this journey. To claim your spot\, send $15 via Venmo and write “Wyetta” in the notes. \nCome\, be part of the circle\, and let’s ride this sacred trail together.” \nBe sure to bring a yoga mat or pillow to sit upon.

SUMMARY:Wyetta Bontempo on Sarod for Portland's Winter Light Festival
DESCRIPTION:The soulful sounds of Indian ragas to welcome light into the winter night\nOn Sarod\nFriday February 9\, 2024 9:15 PM\nWorld Trade Center\n121 SW Salmon St\, Portland\, Oregon\, 97204 USA\n\nCost: FREE \n\n\nThe sarod is a 25 stringed instrument\, used in the Hindustani “raga” music of Northern India. It is among the most popular and prominent instruments in India. The sarod is known for a deep\, rich\, introspective sound\, with sympathetic strings that give it a resonant\, reverberant quality\, in contrast to the sweet\, overtone-rich texture of the sitar. \n\nThis performance lands on new moon\, a time when the light of the moon is absent. Wyetta will invite the light of the moon to return by playing some of the more popular evening ragas which have a relationship with this celestial body and light itself.

SUMMARY:Somjit Dasgupta Concert (Surshringar)
DESCRIPTION:SHRII is pleased to present a surshringar concert featuring Kolkata multi-instrumentalist Somjit Dasgupta. Considering that there are less than 20 surshringar players worldwide\, this is a very rare opportunity to see a surshringar\, let alone experience a surshringar performance. The event will take place outdoors in a lush floral garden featuring waterfalls with Mt Hood and Mt St Helens as a natural backdrop. \nThe cost is by donation. ALL PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT THE RESTORATION OF OVER 200 PRICELESS HISTORIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS \nAbout the Performer\nSomjit Dasgupta is one of the leading performers of sarod\, rabab\, sur-rabab\, mohan veena and surshringar\, the playing techniques of which he learned from his late mentor Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra\, the second most recorded artist by All India Radio and one of the foremost musicians of our times. Somjit has performed around the world and at many Indian Classical Music festivals. \nUnlike the majority of professional musicians\, particularly instrumentalists\, Somjit Dasgupta does not come from a family of professional musicians. As a child\, he was fascinated by a large collection of musical instruments that his grandfather\, a gentleman of leisure and taste\, kept at his estate in what was once called East Bengal\, then East Pakistan\, and now known as Bangladesh. As a young man\, Somjit’s family moved to Kolkata. At the age of 10\, his father began teaching him to play the sitar. After a few years of instruction\, he attended a sarod performance provided by Radhika Mohan Maitra which lasted six hours. He was so moved by the performance that he decided to take up the sarod as his instrument and set out to obtain instruction from ‘Radhu Babu’ as most people called Radhika Mohan Maitra. However\, given Radhu Babu’s stature as both a musician and Zamindar\, he was highly inaccessible to the public. \nRadhika Mohan Maitra lived close to the Jadavpur University Campus in Kolkata in a sprawling bungalow becoming of a rich zamindar (big land owner) while he had also rented another house nearby for his disciples and guests. This is where the young Somjit\, aged thirteen\, visited Radhu Babu and pleaded to be taken as a disciple. To his surprise\, Radhu Babu readily agreed. After consulting the Panchang\, the Indian astrological calendar\, he asked Somjit to return in 20 days with a sarod. Somjit was exceptionally fortunate that he was able to learn directly from Radhu Babu for the usual course was to begin under the tutelage of a senior disciple. Rather\, for Somjit\, from the day he began training\, he stayed at the house of Radhu Babu. He lived with Radhika Mohan Maitra for eight years till Radhu Babu passed away on October 15th\, 1981. \nSomjit Dasgupta has developed a style of playing the surshringar\, rabab\, and sarod that is a genuine reflection of his teacher Radhika Mohan Maitra. His tonal movements are extremely fluid and incorporate heavy use of the drone strings\, which are nicely suited for the surshringar. It is uncommon for him to promote tension producing intervals or dark tones. Rather\, he commonly evokes a peaceful meditation that slows the mind and opens the heart. \nSomjit is the keeper of over 200 historic musical instruments\, which include many of Radhika Mohan Maitra’s instruments. The collection includes 3 different styles of surshringars one of which was owned and played by Wazir Khan\, two sitars which were presented by the Dhaka nawab to Radhu Babu\, several instruments invented by Radhu Babu such as the Dilbahar and the Mohan Veena\, and a number of veenas. Somjit has begun restoring these instruments and intends to create a living heritage in which students can learn about the instruments\, the musicians who played them\, and the dhrupad music to which they were intended.

SUMMARY:Indian Classical Music Appreciation Listening Session #008 "Alochona Chakra" with Somjit Dasgupta
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an afternoon of Indian Classical Music and Camaraderie. In honor of Mahashivaratri (which occurs on Monday March 4th)\, we’ll be doing a deep dive into ragas (Gunkali\, Bhairav\, Bhairavi\, etc.) and instruments (rudra veena) that somehow relate to Lord Shiva. \nAs with each of these listening sessions\, participants will listen to performances or recordings made by some of the most well known Hindustani musicians in the world. All recordings will be played through a high quality sound system. In addition\, stories and information will be shared about the performers\, the ragas\, the instruments\, Hindustani music theory\, and the festivals\, venues\, and recording studios in which these performances occurred. \nIf you’ve got a recording that you’d like to share\, that’s awesome! Please contact the facilitator ahead of time to ensure that you will have the time and space to play your offering. And\, if you don’t have any music to share\, that’s OK too. All we ask is that you come with an open mind and an interest in learning and experiencing the music. \nIn May 2018\, The Society for Historic and Rare Instruments of India (SHRII) held an Indian Classical Music Appreciation Listening Session that Somjit Dasgupta attended. During the session\, Somjit remarked that the session resembled an “Alochona Chakra”. Alochona Chakra is a Bangla/Sanskrit phrase which loosely translates as a discussion circle. According to Somjit\, Alochona Chakras dedicated to Indian Classical Music used to be common in Kolkata. We’re honored to keep this tradition alive through our gathering.

SUMMARY:Christopher Ris on 100 yr old Sarod with Benjy Wertheimer on Tabla
DESCRIPTION:SHRII is pleased to present Christopher Ris (sarod) and Benjy Wertheimer (tabla) on Saturday May 26\, 2018 at 7:00 PM. This will be the premier US performance of an early 20th century sarod made by the late Gopal Sharma or his father-in-law Gobardhan Sharma. The Sharmas used to make Sarods for the Royal courts around Eastern and Northern India and were clearly the premier sarod makers until Hemen began larger volume production of the instrument in the 1960s. \nChristopher Ris (ChrisRis.com) began his study of sarod and vocal music in 1971 under Maestro Ali Akbar Khan. He has since performed as a soloist\, with Khansahib’s orchestra\, The New Maihar Band\, has composed music for 3 films on life in India and an episode of the television series Young Indiana Jones. He has collaborated with flamenco dancer Rosa Montoya and flamenco guitarist Guillermo Rios\, as well as the principal oudist of the National Orchestra of Turkey\, Necati Celik. In 1974\, he began a long-lived relationship with the renowned kathak dancer Chitresh Das. In 1981\, he became Mr. Das’ primary musical accompanist and composer in residence for both his personal performances and his Chhandam Dance Company. Together they dramatically changed the style of kathak accompaniment\, bringing the instrumentalist into the simultaneous improvisations with the dancer that were formerly the province of the tabla drummer alone. He has also collaborated and performed extensively with his wife\, kathak dancer Marni Ris. \nChristopher’s sarod\, named “Dadu” (meaning grandfather)\, is a fine specimen of one that was constructed in the style of Keramatullah Khan. Christopher purchased the sarod from an Indian musician and physicist living in Sweden and has spent countless hours meticulously restoring this instrument. From Jon Barlow in Adrian McNeil’s\, “The fish-shaped peg-box is modeled on the emblem of the Avadhi state\, a fish. Those bottle shaped plates (of the fingerboard) seem only to be found on instruments connected with Keramatullah. Screws on the top surface at the edge. The playing string/chikari pattern is the same as most old sarodes and 13 taraffs (strings) was quite common. The neck looks comfy to play. Tun was the wood of choice in the deep north as it grows along the terai\, but this was probably made in Calcutta. Keramatullah was also in Lucknow and Allahahbad before going to Kolkata after his brother Asadullah Kakubh Khan died in 1915.” \n \nBenjy Wertheimer (shantalamusic.com/benjy) is an award-winning musician\, composer\, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist equally accomplished on tabla\, congas\, percussion\, esraj\, guitar\, and keyboards\, Benjy Wertheimer has performed and recorded with such artists as Krishna Das\, Deva Premal and Miten\, Jai Uttal\, Walter Becker of Steely Dan\, virtuoso guitarist Michael Mandrell\, tabla master Zakir Hussain\, and renowned bamboo flute master G. S. Sachdev. He has also opened for such well-known artists as Carlos Santana\, Paul Winter\, and Narada Michael Walden. Benjy is a founding member of the internationally acclaimed world fusion ensemble Ancient Future. Along with the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart\, he was a contributing composer and member of the Zakir Hussain Rhythm Experience. \nHe began his musical studies at age five\, starting with piano and later violin\, flamenco guitar\, and Afro-Cuban percussion. Benjy has been a student of Indian classical music for over 40 years\, sitting with some of the greatest masters of that tradition\, including Alla Rakha\, Zakir Hussain\, Ali Akbar Khan and Z. M. Dagar. Trained in audio engineering at San Francisco State University\, Benjy is also very much in demand as a producer\, engineer and studio session musician. For over five years\, Benjy scored music for the internationally syndicated NBC series Santa Barbara\, and his CD Circle of Fire went to #1 on the international New Age radio charts in 2002. Making his home in Portland\, Oregon\, he now tours internationally with his wife Heather in the kirtan group Shantala. \n7654 N Crawford St\nPortland\, OR 97203 \nCost: $20 in advance: $25 at the door.

SUMMARY:Somjit Dasgupta on Surshringar with guests Wyetta Bontempo and Naike Swai: Thursday May 17th 7:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:SHRII is pleased to announce that Somjit Dasgupta will be providing a surshringar concert on Thursday May 17th\, 2018 at 7:00 PM. A student of Pandit Radhika Mohan Maitra and the keeper of over 200 historic and rare instruments\, Somjit is one of the few remaining surshringar players in the world trained by one of the legends of pre-independence India. Somjit is the keeper of many surshringar and sarod compositions of the Shahjahanpur Bangla lineage. Check out a sample of his SHRII performance from 2017 in Portland. \nSomjit will be joined by Wyetta Bontempo (surshringar) and Naike Swai (bansuri). The two will perform Jugalbandi style\, a style popularized by Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar beginning in the 1940s. The word Jugalbandi means “entwined twins” and is a form of a duet where the performers explore a raga through an interplay of the two instruments. \nNaike will play on the bansuri\, an Indian bamboo flute\, one of the later instruments to join the Indian Classical Music repertoire. It is also known as the Krishna flute\, which the blue God plays to stir love\, harmony and peace in the heart of nature\, animals and humans. Wyetta and Somjit will play the surshringar. The surshringar is often considered a bass sarod although its sound and playing style are dramatically different. To the best of our knowledge\, there are less than 20 active surshringar players in the world so this is a rare opportunity to hear this beautiful instrument. \n \nWyetta began the study of Indian Classical Music in 2011 at the Ali Akbar College of Music. In 2013\, Wyetta began studying Dagarvani Dhrupad surshringar with Jody Stecher\, the only surshringar student of the late Ustad Z.M. Dagar. Wyetta has played sarod for many collaborative projects. This will be the first time that Wyetta has performed Indian Classical Music and the first time on Surshringar. \nNaike began the study of the Bansuri with Pandit Harsh Wardhan in New Delhi 11 years ago. She has since been performing in solo and collaborative projects across the US. Originally from Tanzania\, Naike came to the US to deepen her knowledge of the healing arts. Naike practices acupuncture\,herbal medicine and vibration medicine in Portland and believes that sound powerfully integrates and shapes our lives. \nThe concert will take place at the former Benson-Chaney Estate located at 7654 N Crawford Ave in Portland\, OR. This is the first time that a musical event has been performed at this site. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see this historic estate and experience its special acoustics. \nThis is a donation based event. All proceeds will benefit the restoration of over 200 historic and rare instruments in India.

SUMMARY:Somjit Dasgupta to give rare Surshringar concert
DESCRIPTION:Surshringar.com is pleased to present a surshringar concert featuring Kolkata multi-instrumentalist Somjit Dasgupta. His tonal movements are extremely fluid and incorporate heavy use of the drone strings\, which are nicely suited for the surshringar. It is uncommon for him to promote tension producing intervals or dark tones. SUMMARY:Pandit Nirmalya Dey Concert
DESCRIPTION:Surshringar.com is pleased to welcome world renowned Dhrupad vocalist\, Pandit Nirmalya Dey\, to Portland\, Oregon. He will be providing a traditional Dhrupad performance and will be accompanied by world renowned pakhawaj player\, Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma. \nNirmalya Dey is a prominent master vocalist and teacher in the tradition of Dagarvani Dhrupad. From 1988 til 2013\, Nirmalya Dey learned from celebrated Dhrupad master\, Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar. He regularly performed on the stage with Z.F. Dagar until he passed away in 2013. \nEarly in his career\, Nirmalya Dey’s musical prowess was acknowledged as he won the first prize at the National Music Competition organized by All India Radio in 1979. In recognition of his excellence and achievement in Dhrupad\, Nirmalya Dey was awarded the senior fellowship by the Ministry of Human Resource Department\, Government of India. He was later bestowed with the Top Grade by the Music Audition Board of India’s national broadcasting channel\, All India Radio\, for his distinctive musical art in the Dhrupad tradition. \nNirmalya Dey is a distinguished artist and has been invited to perform in numerous prestigious festivals and concerts in India and abroad. Beside his solo performances\, Nirmalya has adopted the tradition of “Jugalbandi”\, the musical dialogue between two musicians of the same genre\, and sang with Rudra Veena Maestro Ustad Baha’ud-din Dagar for several concerts. \nDespite the demands placed on his schedule as a performer\, Nirmalya Dey is a devoted teacher\, grooming and initiating the next generation of artists in Dhrupad. He has taught at the University of Delhi and Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra (Delhi) and conducted workshops around the world\, including in Europe and North America. When not performing\, Nirmalya teaches at the Dhrupad Gurukul in Delhi\, India. \nSave

SUMMARY:Indian Classical Music Appreciation Listening Session #005
DESCRIPTION:Please join Brian D Bontempo\, Ph.D. for an evening of curated performances or recordings made by some of the most well known Hindustani musicians in the world. All recordings will be played through a high quality sound system. In addition\, stories and information will be shared about the performers\, the ragas\, the instruments\, Hindustani music theory\, and the festivals\, venues\, and recording studios in which these performances occurred. \nIf you’re feeling moved\, please bring a raga recording to share. Dhrupad\, Khyal\, instrumental performances or recordings are all welcome. There’s no need for you to be an “expert” on your recording either. The intention is to hear something new or to listen from a different angle. In the spirit of maintaining the theme\, let’s refrain from any light classical such as Bhajan\, Dhammar\, Thumri\, Dadra\, Ghazal\, Chaiti\, Kajri and Tappa and Qawwali. \nSuggested donation is $10 with all proceeds going directly to the Society for Historic and Rare Instruments of India (SHRII). No one to be turned away for insufficient funds. It is more important that you come and enjoy the music than donate to the organization.
